Tasted Beers

2003 (March - September)

These are most of the beer tasted during the above period - that is, those beers I wrote a short comment about. Just a few beer, without rating and comment, are missing in this file. Of course you can find all the beers in the Database in all its formats. The comments are the ones I wrote at the time of the tasting; the rating is instead the updated one.
Sometimes I don't rate a beer at my first taste, and sometimes I just give a "+"; and for the moment I don't give the Lambics any score. See Notes in the main database page.

23/03/2003 LA TOURMENTE DE MARS (GRANDS COLS); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); FRA; 5.9 alcvol%;
23/03/2003 LA TOURMENTE GENEPY (GRANDS COLS); SPECIAL; GENEPY; FRA; 5.9 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
Two lagers brewed by a "mountain" french micro of Briancon, close to the italian border. Tourmente de Mars was good but not very remarkable. More interesting is the Genepy beer: nothing special about its production (a commercial Genepy liquor is simply added at bottling) but the result is quite pleasant: the sweet-aromatic genepy flavour blends better than I thought with the bittersweet of the beer. Thirst quentching and corroborating after a day on the snow!.

30/03/2003 PUSTERTALER SPEZIAL (PUSTERTALER); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); ITA; 5.4 alcvol%; voto:7.00;
30/03/2003 PUSTERTALER WEIZEN (PUSTERTALER); WHEAT (GRANO); WEIZE; ITA; 5.4 alcvol%; voto:7.00;
The brewery is italian and claims the use of locally grown barley. Actually (at the moment of my tasting) the barley is sent to Germany for malting, then the beer is brewed by an Austrian small brewery and sent back to be sold in Italy. The result is good anyway, both for the weizen (with aroma of banana) and for the malty Spezial.

10/05/2003 PETRUS OUD BRUIN (BAVIK); ALE; BRUIN; BEL; 5.5 alcvol%;
Way past the BBE date when tasted, so impossible to rate. I could detect anyway a pleasant tartness balancing the sweetness...

17/05/2003 IMMORT'ALE (DOGFISH HEAD); ALE; USA; 11.0 alcvol%; voto:9.25;
One of the most complex beers I ever tasted. A sort of smoked barleywine, but not just that: notes of chocolate, spices, winey add to the gentle smokeness and are supported by the full body and strenght of this beer. Absolute top rate at first sip, then the beer (surely a "meditation" one) shows that it is not easy to drink - that is, you enjoy one bottle but wouldn't ask for a second one, as on the contrary I would do for a big Westvleteren. Only for this reason it does not score the maximum rate.

24/05/2003 VIN D'ORZ (SORA' LAMA'); ALE; BARLEY WINE; ITA; 7.8 alcvol%;
A barley wine brewed from extract (and you can feel it, though it is now a big handicap) that actually reminded me more of a strong scotch ale. Interesting but to be perfectioned.

24/05/2003 CASTAGNASCA (BUSALLA); SPECIAL; CHESTNUT (CASTAGNA); ITA; 5.7 alcvol%; voto:8.75;
One of the more interesting, characterful and well done among the new italian microbrewed beers.The beer is rounded, tasty and drinkable, the chestnut is clearly detectable but still subtle and there is a clear smokeness due to the wood-dried chestnuts used in the mash (as flour). A gently hopped and dry finish makes the beer even more pleasant to drink.

30/05/2003 PRIMA PILS (VICTORY); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); PILSEN; USA; voto:8.50;
Classic and very good unfiltered Pils with a stong but pleasant bitterness as it is difficult to find even in Europe...

21/06/2003 NELSON'S BLOOD (FLAGSHIP); ALE; OLD/WINTER; ENG; 6.0 alcvol%; voto:7.75;
Amber strong ale, pleasant and fairly balanced though a bit sweet

21/06/2003 ENTIRE STOUT (HOP BACK); STOUT & PORTER; DRY; ENG; 4.4 alcvol%; voto:7.75;
21/06/2003 SHOREDITCH STOUT (PITFIELD); STOUT & PORTER; DRY; ENG; 4.0 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
21/06/2003 WOLF STOUT (WOLF); STOUT & PORTER; DRY; ENG; 4.8 alcvol%; voto:8.00;
Three good stouts tasted at a CAMRA Festival (almost the only way to find reak dark ales in UK). Shoreditch is light bodied and very roasted, almost a real coffee. The two other stouts are more rounded and balanced (I had a slight preference for these). Anyway all three stouts are characterful and well made.

21/06/2003 SARAH HUGHES PALE AMBER (SARAH HUGHES); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.0 alcvol%; voto:7.00;
Sweet pale ale, very honeyish in aroma and taste.

22/06/2003 1828 ANNIVERSARY ALE (LEES); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.8 alcvol%; voto:7.75;
Classic amber special bitter, well rounded with a good but not overpowering hoppyness.

22/06/2003 YANKEES (ROOSTER); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.3 alcvol%; voto:8.75;
Exceptional hops in the aroma and also in the mouth with a sustained (but not excessive) and long bitterness, balanced by the good body of a beer that is actually not strong. Great personality and drinkability of this ale, among the best "new wave" ales (pale and hoppy) that I ever tasted.

24/06/2003 GUINNESS COOL CASK (GUINNESS); STOUT & PORTER; DRY; ENG; 4.2 alcvol%;
25/06/2003 YOUNG'S AAA (YOUNG'S); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.0 alcvol%;
Two quite different beers that are both brewed (at least as a a marketing idea) to be drunk cooler than usual. Guinness Cool Cask is a somewhat bland stout, but anyway pleasant enough. AAA. though not exceptional, works well: a bit too sweet to be drunk warmer, but not bad if a bit cooler.

21/06/2003 FLOWERS ORIGINAL (WHITBREAD); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.3 alcvol%;
23/06/2003 ST.AUSTELL TRADITION (ST. AUSTELL); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.1 alcvol%; voto:7.00;
25/06/2003 SMILE'S BRISTOL IPA (SMILE'S); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.5 alcvol%; voto:7.00;
None of these bitter ales - though good - were really unforgettable: Flowers is balanced but a bit too bland (anyway fair), the other two ales (better) can be good session ales.

15/07/2003 BRAMBLE STOUT (BURTON BRIDGE); SPECIAL; BERRY STOUT; ENG; 5.0 alcvol%;
The bottle I tasted was old and difficult to rate an interesting beer, the fruit is subtle and gives a gentle tartness that blends well with the dry and roasted taste of the good stout used as a base.

29/07/2003 MAMA KRIEK (BALADIN); SPECIAL; CILIEGE; ITA; 5.8 alcvol%; voto:8.50;
On the already good and complex Wayan cherries are added to increase subtlety and richness, though the fruit contribute is light and subtle in aroma and taste. More a Saison than a fruit beer tasted young but very promising

31/07/2003 HANSA (HANSA); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); NOR; 4.7 alcvol%;
31/07/2003 RINGNES PILS (RINGNES); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); PILSEN; NOR; 4.7 alcvol%;
Two lager from Norway (thanks Stefano & Fede!) correctly made and drinkable slightly better the Ringnes

07/08/2003 ALPHAND BLANCHE (ALPHAND); WHEAT (GRANO); BLANCHE-WIT; FRA; 5.0 alcvol%;
A bit lemony, could be enjoyable but the bottle was too close to thge BBE date to give a correct rating.

18/08/2003 AFFLIGEM BLONDE (AFFLIGEM); ALE; BLONDE; BEL; 6.8 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
Bottle conditioned? Well, there is almost no trace of sediment a bit sweetish, has a good spicy character that makes it interesting.

29/08/2003 RISERVA ORO PLANAIS (CASTELLO DI UDINE); STRONG LAGER, PALE (CHIARA); BOCK; ITA; 6.2 alcvol%; voto:6.75;
A fair beer but less interesting than surprising Riserva Rossa. Clean and malty but lacking in the hop side.

08/09/2003 ABBATIALE (ST. AMAND); ALE; GARDE; FRA; 7.0 alcvol%; voto:6.75;
At first seems just an ordinary and bland golden ale, with the gin flavouring almost not preceptible than if you let it warm some characters develops. Drinkable.

15/09/2003 1066 (HAMPSHIRE); ALE; STRONG BITTER/PALE; ENG; 6.0 alcvol%; voto:8.50;
Nice and slightly spicy hop aroma, with some supporting malt. In the mouth, the body is medium, almost a bit watery (with respect to strength) to balance the clear but pleasant hop bitterness that lingers in the finish. Very good.

20/09/2003 DEBOWE MOCNE (KOMPANIA PIWOWARSKA); STRONG LAGER, PALE (CHIARA); POL; 7.0 alcvol%; 14.5P; voto:6.75;
Strong ale recently designed to address a local tendency to more alcoholic beers. Seems even stronger than it is - something like a lesser Bier du Demon, take this as a pro or a con. Lightly hopped, sweet and with some alcohol in the taste has some malt character and drinkability.

23/09/2003 TROIS PISTOLES (UNIBROUE); ALE; BELGIAN STRONG; CAN; 9.0 alcvol%; voto:9.00;
Very good abbey style ale! Aroma is mainly chocolate, with some ripe fruit (and cherries with spirit). In the mouth it is silky, and the sweetness is balanced by a gentle and nice touch of tartness. Persistence is not so long, but it is still an excellent beer.

24/09/2003 TORRONA (CENTRALE DELLA BIRRA); SPECIAL; HONEY (MIELE); ITA; 7.0 alcvol%; 16.5P; voto:7.25;
Designed to evocate and match the taste of Torrone, a local famous dessert, mainly thanks to the honey in the recipe. Pale and sweet, a nice try, I will taste it again soon!
